Message from the Chairperson

Chairperson

Greetings,

I am Cho Sunghee, Chairperson of the Asian Dementia Foundation (ADF).

Dementia is often referred to as the ‘most heartbreaking farewell.’ It is a disease that makes it difficult for individuals to maintain their daily lives due to memory loss and other cognitive impairments, causing psychological, physical, and economic hardships not only for patients but also for their families.

It is projected that Korea will become the world’s most aged country by 2047, surpassing Japan. In addition, as of December 2024, the proportion of the population aged 65 and older has exceeded 20%, marking Korea’s transition into a super-aged society. Therefore, we must prepare for rapid population aging and age-related diseases. Among them, dementia remains one of the most feared diseases among older adults.

The estimated number of dementia patients in Korea is expected to exceed one million by the end of 2025, and one out of every three people aged 65 or older is reported to have dementia or mild cognitive impairment. Dementia has now become a national and social challenge that extends beyond an individual issue.

The Asian Dementia Foundation (ADF) supports research and development of technologies to overcome dementia, including dementia prediction, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment technologies, and strives to take the lead in overcoming dementia as a national challenge through dementia prevention education and public awareness activities.

In addition, the Gwangju Dementia Prevention Center of our foundation participates in dementia cohort follow-up studies and dementia biomedical big data development projects in collaboration with the Gwangju Alzheimer’s & Related Dementia Cohort Research Center (GARD) at Chosun University.

Through these various efforts to lead the fight against dementia, the Asian Dementia Foundation will continue to do its utmost to help local communities and people live healthier and happier lives.

Thank you.
